England Under-19s footballer Georgia Eaton-Collins received a financial boost from the Ipswich Sporting Lunch Club after being presented with a SportsAid award by legendary goalkeeper Peter Shilton. Shilton, who was capped 125 times by England and made over 1,000 professional appearances, was guest of honour at the Lunch Club last month.
“It’s wonderful to see the local business community coming together to raise money for up-and-coming sportsmen and women,” said Shilton. “It has been a real privilege to be here and meet representatives of the businesses behind the club. I know it’s making a real difference to the lives of young sportsmen and women across Suffolk.”
The Ipswich Sporting Lunch Club was set up in January 2015 to raise money for SportsAid and help support young athletes across Suffolk. Double European Cup winner Shilton entertained guests with stories from his career, which saw him pull on the Three Lions at three consecutive World Cups, before handing over the grant to Ipswich-based Georgia.
Georgia, 17, plays at centre back for Arsenal Women. She has represented England at Under-15s and Under-17s level before stepping up to the Under-19s recently. “I am so grateful to SportsAid for their support, it really does make a world of difference to me,” said Georgia. “For my grant to be presented by Peter Shilton makes it even more special.”
Georgia’s current aim is to gain selection for the England Under-19s squad for the European Championships in Switzerland in July. The Lunch Club she attended with Shilton is expected to have raised in excess of £10,000 for SportsAid with every penny set to be distributed to the brightest young sporting prospects throughout the county.
The Lunch Club is supported by seven businesses from the Ipswich area - Pound Gates Chartered Insurance Brokers, Ensors Chartered Accountants, Handelsbanken, Ellisons Solicitors, Concertus, StrategiQ and Picasso HR. Malcolm McGready, from Ensors Chartered Accountants, was delighted to host another hugely successful Lunch Club.
“On behalf of the businesses behind the Ipswich Lunch Club I would like to thank Peter for supporting the event,” said Malcolm. “To have somebody of his stature involved, with everything he has achieved in football, is fantastic. Importantly, what it does, is enable us to raise even more money for SportsAid in Suffolk and that, ultimately, is what it’s all about”.
The next Ipswich Sporting Lunch Club event takes place on Friday 21 September 2018 at Wherstead Park. The guest speaker will be Suffolk boxer and Olympic bronze medallist Anthony Ogogo. Please contact Adam Baker on firstname.lastname@example.org for further information.
