SportsAid project recognised by London 2012 Inspire mark

The b active Sporting Excellence initiative from SportsAid, which provides funding and expert support for young sportsmen and women in Bradford, has been recognised by the prestigious London 2010 Inspire mark.

The exclusive brand, given jointly to SportsAid and its project partner Bradford Metropolitan District Council, recognises exceptional projects that have been directly inspired by the London 2012 Olympiad.

Lord Coe, chairman of the London Organising Committee of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, said: "I am proud that with the help of partners such as the City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council and SportsAid we are delivering on our vision to use the power of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games to boost participation in sport.”

Nearly 80 athletes from Olympic and Paralympic disciplines have already benefited from the project. In addition to the £65,000 of financial support they have received, they are also getting expert support from the elite sport science programme at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Councillor the Rev Paul Flowers, executive member for culture, tourism and sport at Bradford Council said: "I was incredibly impressed with the commitment and enthusiasm of the many young people who attended last night's inspirational event. I will really enjoy seeing the athletes fulfil their potential and feel proud that the Council along with SportsAid has helped them on their journey."

Tim Lawler, SportsAid chief executive, said: "We hope this innovative approach to nurturing talent provides some richly deserved recognition for the athletes and inspires their peers and local community to support the future of British Sport. It’s great news that this is the first SportsAid project to be recognised by the Inspire mark and the fact that it’s taking place in Yorkshire proves 2012 isn’t just about London"
