SportsAid athletes at National Portrait Gallery
A new exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery features 15 SportsAid athletes, including 2012 hopefuls Victoria Pendleton and Rebecca Adlington.
The BT ‘Road to 2012’ display is part of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad and the 30 photographic portraits, entitled ‘Setting Out’, show a new side to Britain’s medal hopefuls and those behind the bid and the delivery of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The portraits are the first of 100 that will be displayed in the gallery over this and subsequent summers in the run up to the Games. Accompanying them will be video interviews and behind-the-scenes photographs revealing the human stories behind London 2012.
SportsAid was consulted in the planning phase of the project and half of the first 30 portraits feature athletes supported by the charity, including: Dave Roberts CBE, Denise Lewis OBE, Jonathan Edwards CBE, Ade Adepitan MBE, Jason Kenny MBE, Sir Steve Redgrave, Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, Rebecca Adlington OBE, Tom Daley, Zoe Smith, Jessica Ennis, Katherine Grainger MBE, Victoria Pendleton MBE and Savannah Marshall.
The exhibition will be an insightful record of the journey to London 2012 and runs until 26 September.

About us

SportsAid, previously known as SportsAid Foundation (SAF), was founded in 1976. Its principal function was to raise funds from the private sector to provide financial assistance to Britain's amateur sportsmen and women. The aim was to help them prepare for competitions against better-funded, overseas athletes.
