More than two hundred ParalympicsGB athletes have had support from SportsAid
28 Aug 2012
SportsAid is proud to confirm that 201 members of the team representing Great Britain at the London 2012 Paralympic Games have received the charity’s support during their careers.
Among them is 100m and 200m sprinter Sally Brown who is the current holder of SportsAid’s One-to-Watch Award – given to young athletes who show great potential – and two of the youngest members of the team, wheelchair fencer Gaby Down and swimmer Amy Marren (see photo), both 14.
SportsAid’s Chief Executive Tim Lawler commented, “This is an historic year for the Paralympic movement in Britain and SportsAid is proud to have played such a significant part. The growing interest has meant we’ve been able to help a record number of disabled athletes in recent years and it is fantastic to see so many of them in the team for London.
“London 1948 saw the birth of the Paralympic movement and London 2012 is destined to be another watershed year. We must build on this momentum now to ensure more talented sportsmen and women get the funding and recognition they need to succeed.”

Editor’s notes
- This updates an earlier announcement by SportsAid, made on 18 July 2012, in which it was correctly stated that 202 members of the ParalympicsGB team have had the charity’s support. The revised figure of 201 is due to the following changes to the team: footballer Josh Beacham and 1,500m runner Andy Kaar are no longer competing, while cyclist Crystal Lane has since been added to the team.
SportsAid's Patron

As SportsAid’s patron, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge is helping to shine a light on the achievements and potential of young athletes throughout the UK – an inspiring generation who one day hope to represent the nation at the Olympic or Paralympic Games. SportsAid alumnus Sir Chris Hoy welcomed the patronage by saying, “SportsAid played an important role when I was starting out so I know what a huge boost this will be to the young sportsmen and women the charity helps today. As patron Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge will give them the profile they deserve.”
