The Bank of Scotland raised more than £1,200 for SportsAid this month with a gritted, 90-minute staff football match at Dunfermline Athletic Football Club.

To double the donation made to the charity, the company has matched the funds
raised by each player at the game.

“I organised the event to help raise awareness about the London 2012 Olympics and the good work that SportsAid has done for athletes who have previously competed at the Games,” said Bank of Scotland’s Michael Cockburn.

“The final score was 5 - 1 and although I was on the losing team, it was a great game accompanied by a great atmosphere. Our Local Hero Paula Henderson was also there to present the winning team with the Mike Lambert Memorial Trophy, which has been hotly contested between the departments over the years.”

The Bank of Scotland has supported SportsAid since 2008. Its Local Heroes programme helps Britain’s best young athletes when they need it most and has supported 276 of them this year alone.

“I cannot thank those responsible for my Local Hero Award enough,” said 21-year-old 800m runner Oliver Blake from Oswestry. “A lot of my friends have jobs to help them through university but as I train two times a day and study, I am unable to do this.

“However, I believe that the most benefit I have obtained from the award is the recognition from others. It is hugely encouraging to think that somebody else thinks that you have the talent and dedication to make it to the top of your sport.”

About us

SportsAid, previously known as SportsAid Foundation (SAF), was founded in 1976. Its principal function was to raise funds from the private sector to provide financial assistance to Britain's amateur sportsmen and women. The aim was to help them prepare for competitions against better-funded, overseas athletes.
