A British Olympic Association announcement on May 9 added another three sailors to Team GB for the London 2012 Olympic Games and we are pleased to confirm that two of them have had support from SportsAid during their careers.
In the 49er class, Ben Rhodes (pictured at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing) was supported by SportsAid in 1999, while Alison Young, who was supported by TASS (a scheme that SportsAid helps to manage on behalf of UK Sport) in 2011, will compete in London 2012's laser radial event.
Stephen Park, RYA Olympic manager and sailing team leader, said: "As we go into the Games, I can honestly say hand on heart that we've got people who've got potential to medal in every single event. We've never had that before. That doesn't mean to say that we'll medal in every event - far from it - but in terms of preparing a good team, the sailors have done an incredible job to date."
This takes the number of SportsAid athletes and alumni who have qualified for Team GB for London 2012 to 49, which is 62% of the 79 athletes named in total so far.
