Abbi Carter
Abbi, 18 years old and from Hessle near Hull, is one of the UK’s brightest prospects in athletics. She specialises in throwing the hammer. For the last three years, Abbi has been supported by SportsAid partner First Hull Trains.
She has just finished her first season in a new age group both in the UK and internationally (the Under 20 age group) and has managed to increase her personal best by over 4 metres this year, an impressive improvement. Abbi also achieved the necessary standard for the European Junior Championships this season and came 14th in her first year in her new age group.
This year has been her most intense yet as she has competed at several open age competitions and acquitted herself extremely well, finishing 2nd in the UK for U20 and 10th in the open age category.
This year Abbi has also achieved selection for the World Juniors Championships next season, and she’s now looking forward to the closed season that will prepare her for the significant and exciting challenges in the year ahead.
At U17 level, Abbi held the all time record for her age group with a hammer throw in excess of 57m.
Abbi has already taken her first steps in the international arena, having represented GB at the European Youth Olympic Festival last year and being given the honour of carrying the GB flag.
Abbi first started throwing discuss and shot at the age of 14 and quickly became the no.1 ranked thrower in her age group before specialising in the hammer.
Her long-term ambition is to become the best ever GB hammer thrower and compete at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
